Abdullah Atalay Spoke at the SolarEX Solar Energy Fair

Our Chairman Mr. Abdullah Atalay delivered an important speech at the SolarEX Solar Energy Fair on the future of the energy sector. In his speech, he evaluated energy generation and consumption in the 2023–2024 period, explaining how factors such as industrial consumption, wind generation, dam water levels, and imported coal prices affect energy supply and demand.

Mr. Atalay emphasized the importance of inertia in energy systems, noting that conventional generators provide frequency regulation through their stored kinetic energy. He stated that modern wind and solar plants — connected to the grid via power electronics equipment — do not inherently provide inertia. He said new technologies that provide frequency response in modern energy systems must be developed; the electromagnetic chains associated with conventional synchronous generators are being replaced by sensors and software that control how wind and solar plants respond to grid conditions.

He emphasized that grid flexibility and frequency control can be achieved with increased renewable energy, and that inertia is not a natural barrier to renewables — quite the opposite, with developing technology, renewable energy systems can be further optimized. He also stated that distribution and transmission planning must be equipped with a modern grid vision and that procedural simplification for residential rooftop SPP applications is important.

Mr. Atalay emphasized that technological developments and innovations in the energy sector will increase efficiency in energy generation and contribute to a more sustainable future. He noted that as renewable energy investments increase, the energy infrastructure must also be modernized accordingly, touching on the importance of developing energy storage systems and smart grid technologies. He said Türkiye will continue to advance with innovative and sustainable solutions in the energy sector.
